Fuel Surcharge Table

RAJO's fuel surcharge comes off the Department of Energy's weekly U.S. national on-highway diesel average, mapped through the Rajo Diesel Band Table. Drayage and the LTL band are both published below - they differ by seven points, so check which one your lane sits on. The percentage multiplies line haul only.

Regional basis

RAJO quotes off the U.S. national average. Gulf Coast (PADD 3) is published beside it because some contracts name a regional basis, and a customer on that basis should not have to ask which band they are in.

Update schedule

The DOE posts the U.S. national on-highway diesel average every Monday afternoon and the band holds for the whole week. Percentages come off the Rajo Diesel Band Table: $0.05 diesel bands, half a point per band, drayage seven points above the LTL band. The percentage multiplies line haul only - accessorials sit outside it and carry no fuel.

How FSC is calculated

RAJO shows fuel surcharge as both a percentage and a fuel-cost-per-mile equivalent so customers can review the number before dispatch.

Quote review

When you request a quote from RAJO Transportation, RAJO can confirm whether percentage FSC, per-mile FSC, or all-in pricing is the cleanest fit for that lane.

What is a Fuel Surcharge?

A Fuel Surcharge (FSC) is an additional fee applied to freight shipments to account for fluctuating diesel fuel prices. Since fuel is one of the most variable operating costs in trucking, the FSC helps keep pricing aligned with actual market conditions.

Instead of constantly adjusting base rates, the industry uses FSC tables that move with the DOE National Diesel Average, published weekly. RAJO shows the same surcharge two ways: percent of line haul and a current dollars-per-mile equivalent.

  • Transparency: Customers can see the weekly percentage and the practical per-mile impact.
  • Fairness: Costs rise and fall with actual diesel market movement.
  • Predictability: Standard tables make budgeting easier for repeat lanes.

How to Calculate Your FSC

Method 1: Percentage of Line Haul

Use the live percentage above when you are quoting a lane or building an all-in rate.

Base Rate: $2,000

Current FSC percentage: use the live value above

FSC Amount: Base Rate x Current FSC %

Total: Base Rate + FSC Amount

Method 2: Per-Mile Surcharge

Use the live rate-per-mile above when you need a quick lane estimate.

Distance: 1,000 miles

Current FSC rate per mile: use the live value above

FSC Amount: Distance x Current Rate per Mile

Total Line Haul: Base Rate + FSC Amount

Reading an all-in rate

This is where fuel gets charged twice. An all-in rate already contains the surcharge, so applying a percentage to it again bills fuel on fuel. Back the line haul out first:

line haul = all-in / (1 + FSC% / 100)

$551.22 all-in at 55.50% → $354.48 line haul + $196.74 fuel

Accessorials sit outside the all-in and carry no fuel — overweight, prepull, drop, chassis, detention and storage are billed on top.

Updated every Monday

The EIA posts the weekly on-highway retail average Monday afternoon. RAJO reads it the same day and the band holds through Sunday - no mid-week repricing, in either direction.

Past the printed range

Published tables stop at $6.00. The rule does not: every $0.05 of diesel adds another half point, and the table above continues that arithmetic so a quote never runs off the end of the scale.

Named on the rate confirmation

For contracted or repeat lanes RAJO writes the basis into the agreement - national or Gulf Coast, and which column - so the invoice and the quote cannot disagree later.
