Intermodal container moves are the backbone of global trade, carrying goods from marine terminals and rail ramps to warehouses and distribution centers. However, port and rail drayage comes with unique operational bottlenecks—from chassis shortages to demurrage penalties.

For importers, freight forwarders, and customhouse brokers, minimizing container dwell time is key to protecting profit margins. In this article, we outline best practices for navigating container drayage.

Understanding the Fee Structure

Container logistics is highly time-sensitive, governed by strict carrier and terminal contracts. Failing to return equipment on time triggers costly accessorial fees:

  • Demurrage: A fee charged by the terminal for keeping containers inside the port/ramp beyond the allowed "free time" (usually 4 to 5 days).
  • Detention (Per Diem): A fee charged by the steamship line (ocean carrier) for keeping containers outside the terminal beyond the allowed free days.
  • Storage Fees: Charged by railroads or off-site container yards for storing containers on their property.

Proactive Strategies for Drayage Efficiency

To keep containers moving and avoid accessorial penalties, drayage managers should utilize three primary strategies:

1. Last Free Day (LFD) Awareness

Track the Last Free Day (LFD) of every container across ocean carrier and terminal portals. High-volume shippers use integrated API tracking to trigger automatic alerts 48 hours before free time expires.

2. Prepull Programs

A prepull is when a drayage carrier pulls a container from the port or rail ramp before the LFD and stores it in their secure local yard. This is particularly useful when:

  • The shipper's warehouse is closed or at maximum capacity.
  • Ocean terminals are experiencing severe gate congestion or long wait times.
  • The container must be delivered at a precise, time-critical window (e.g., early Monday morning).

3. Chassis Management

Secure chassis availability early. Chassis shortages are one of the most common causes of port delays. Using private chassis pools or partnering with carriers that own their chassis fleet guarantees equipment is ready when the container is discharged.

Managing the Empty Return Loop

The container move is not complete until the empty container is returned to the terminal or designated depot. This "empty return" loop requires careful coordination:

  • Street Turns: Reusing an empty import container for an export booking without returning it to the port first. This saves two transportation legs and reduces chassis dwell time.
  • Dual Transactions: Coordinating driver routes so they deliver an export container (or return an empty) and pick up a loaded import container in a single trip, maximizing driver efficiency and reducing terminal wait times.
